Certain medical conditions are not appropriate to manage outside of the hospital for pregnancy, labor, and birth. This does not occur frequently, but in order to ensure the highest safety standards for an out of hospital birth, AABC has developed a list of conditions that are not approved for delivery at the birth center. Some examples include:*

Any hypertensive (high blood pressure) disorder prior to or during pregnancy
Pre-eclampsia in current pregnancy
Blood clotting disorders
Placenta Previa (placenta is over the cervix)
Uncontrolled chronic medical diseases
HIV, Hepatitis B or C, or Syphilis
Pre-existing diabetes or gestational diabetes requiring medication
History of two or more cesarean section deliveries or one cesarean delivery with a vertical incision
Twins or greater multiples this pregnancy
Breech presentation (baby not head-down) at term

Birth Center Tour FAQs

How long is a birth center tour?

Group tours last approximately 45 minutes and include a walk-through of our birth suites, water birth tubs, and prenatal spaces, plus an overview of our model of care by one of our midwives, and a financial overview with our front office team.

What is the difference between a group tour and a personalized consult?

Group tours are for prospective families who want to see our space and learn about our model of care. They are free, take about 45 minutes, and include multiple families.
Personalized consults are a free one-on-one appointment with a midwife and include a medical history review, and allow for discussion of your individual care needs and preferences.

Do I need to be pregnant to schedule a tour?

No. We welcome anyone considering midwifery care to join us on a group tour. However, individual consults are reserved for those already pregnant.

Not pregnant but still want an individualized visit?

Consider a preconception or well-woman care appointment. AABC offers services beyond pregnancy, including annual wellness exams, preconception counseling, contraception, and STI screening, and we accept most major insurance.
