What to Look for in a Birth Center

What to Look for in a Birth Center

Deciding on your birthplace is an important choice among the many you need to make in your birth journey. The place you choose needs to uphold your values and ensure your comfort at one of the most important milestones in your life.

If you have decided to give birth at a birth center, here are some things to consider:

Things To Consider Before Choosing A Birth Center

  1. Location and Accessibility

The location of your birth center is of paramount importance. It should be located in close proximity and should be easily accessible. This will ensure that you attend all your prenatal appointments and also get there with ease during your labor.

  1. Staffing and Qualifications

Ensure the center is staffed by licensed midwives and certified healthcare professionals. These are the people who are responsible for you and your baby’s health; they must be qualified to do so. Also ask about the center’s policies on emergencies, transfers, and medical interventions should you need them.

  1. Facilities and Comfort

Make sure you do an overview of the facilities available at the birth center. Make a list of services or facilities you need, and then check if the birth center has it. This could include birthing tubs, private rooms, and family-friendly amenities.

Also consider if the center is a comfortable, home-like setting and if it fosters relaxation and a calm environment. Ask about the extent of freedom mothers have in customizing their birthing experience and inquire about the restrictions present at the center.

  1. Guidance and Support

Your birth team can greatly influence how your birth experience feels. It’s important to know who is allowed with you during labor. You can ask about the number of visitors allowed and flexibility in support persons you can have (partners, doulas, family members).

It’s also good to talk about the level of support you can expect from the staff (midwives and nurses) during labor.
