FAQs on Labor and Birth
As your due date grows closer, it’s common to start to wonder what your birth will be like. Here are some of the most common questions parents-to-be ask us about labor and birth:
What is the birth suite like?
We make our birth suites as cozy and comfortable as possible. You also have the option to bring your additions to the room to make it more suited to your needs.
Our birth suites are equipped with:
- birth tubs
- walk-in showers
- spacious beds
- dimmable lights
- speakers for music
You can also bring in your favorite blanket, aromatherapy, music players, or anything else you like.
When should I call the midwife?
You can call the midwife whenever you feel like you’re in need of assistance. However, we usually follow the “4-1-1” pattern for most of our clients; having them come into the birth center when they have contractions every four minutes, lasting one minute, for one hour.
We explain the difference between early and active labor to help you distinguish between the two. In early labor, you might even be able to sleep through contractions, and we want you to rest, stay hydrated, and eat.
Call the midwife when you are experiencing more intense contractions that require focus. These contractions also last longer and are less far apart.
Who can come to my birth?
There are no restrictions on who you can bring. We encourage you to get anyone who can provide support and encouragement during labor. It can be your partner, friend, doula, etc.
If you have any other questions or requests regarding your birth, we’ll be more than happy to discuss them during your prenatal appointments or give us a call!
