What is a Fetal Non-Stress Test (NST)
Sometimes in the course of pregnancy, it’s useful to do testing directly related to the baby to make sure they’re doing well and developing properly. This type of testing usually includes non-invasive methods like a Fetal Non-Stress Test or NST.
What is a Fetal Non-Stress Test (NST)?
An NST is a simple, noninvasive test that poses no known risks or side effects on the mother or baby. As the name indicates, no stress is placed on the baby during the test. It simply records fetal heart rate and movements in relation to uterine contractions via a monitor placed on your belly.
This test can tell us if the baby is receiving enough oxygen and if the placenta and umbilical cord are functioning well.
Why would someone need an NST?
Some instances where an NST is recommended include:
- You’re in preterm or post-term labor, so we might do an NST to make sure your baby is doing fine and doesn’t need any emergency interventions for delivery
- You notice a change in the pattern of fetal movements
- You have high blood pressure or are unwell and we want to ensure it isn’t affecting the baby
- The ultrasound indicates a problem with your baby’s growth
Can AABC perform an NST?
Yes, our midwives are trained in performing and interpreting the results of an NST.
What happens if you fail an NST?
You can’t really pass or fail an NST. If your NST indicates there could be a problem with your baby, we evaluate a range of options with you. If we notice something is off, we might recommend an ultrasound or additional testing to make sure there isn’t a more serious cause for the changes.
