Should I do Preconception Counseling?

Should I do Preconception Counseling?

Whether you and your partner are trying to figure out when to get pregnant, planning on getting pregnant soon, or actively trying to conceive, it’s good to start on the right track with preconception counseling.

While preconception counseling is not necessary, it is always recommended. Austin Area Birthing Center offers Preconception Counseling by certified experts who will help you prepare mentally and physically for pregnancy and childcare.

What is preconception counseling?

The preconception visit is all about getting the parents ready to conceive and welcome a baby into the world. We talk about their health, pre-existing conditions, medications they may take, and lifestyle changes if required.

Our experienced midwives will discuss your pregnancy plans and how to best prepare for it. These discussions have a strong focus on healthy lifestyle and nutrition, which help us identify and correct potential problems before conception.

We also talk you through your concerns and expectations regarding childbirth and pregnancy and help give you a more realistic expectation.

What happens in preconception counseling?

Preconception counseling revolves around preparing people for pregnancy. Each session can vary from person to person depending on their knowledge and expectations.

In general, we’ll talk about:

  • How to track your menstrual cycle and how it affects your conception chances
  • Identifying your fertile window
  • How often intercourse is recommended
  • Prenatal medications and supplements
  • Switching to conception-friendly medications (if someone is already taking medications due to a pre-existing condition)
  • Quitting habits that hinder fertility such as smoking or excessive drinking

We also offer blood tests, scans, and genetic screening to identify if the mother or partner is a carrier for any chronic conditions or genetic diseases as well if this is something of interest to the family.

Do you take insurance?

Austin Area Birthing Center accepts most health insurance and also offers affordable out-of-pocket payment plans.
