Birth Control Options at Austin Area Birthing Center

Planning and preparing for your future family allows you to be physically and emotionally ready to welcome a new member into your family when the time is right, along with all the challenges it brings.

Birth control can be tricky to navigate through, given all the misinformation and opinions around it. But don’t worry! Your midwife can help you figure out what the best choice of birth control is for you.

Can the midwives at Austin Area Birthing Center help me with birth control?

Yes, as part of our well-person healthcare services, we also cover birth control. Our Certified Nurse Midwives provide birth control consultations and discuss various options to help you decide which would be better suited to you according to your health, duration of birth control, and other considerations.

Birth control methods include fertility awareness methods, birth control pills, Depo-Provera, patches, rings, IUDs, and Nexplanon. We can prescribe a wide range of birth control options, including pills and Depo-Provera.

Not every type of birth control works for everyone. This is why we recommend getting a consultation to explore the risks and benefits of each option tailored to each client.

What are some of the most popular birth control options?

Overall, the most commonly used birth control options are barrier methods (condoms), the pill, and an intrauterine device (IUD). Many clients prefer non-hormonal options, so they opt for barrier options like condoms and diaphragms or Paragard (copper IUD) for a longer-term option.

Are there any new birth control options that are becoming popular?

Research is constantly coming up with newer contraception methods, such as the pill for men, a spermicide cream, and a new PH gel with around 95% effectiveness that creates an inhospitable environment for fertilization– but these aren’t as readily available or usable yet.

Among older methods, IUDs are gaining popularity among clients. The copper IUD is a non-hormone option, plus it’s also long-term and doesn’t require a daily dosage.

If you have any other questions, we would be happy to answer them. Please send us a message to book an appointment!
